Major Duties of the Position:

  • Lead and oversee the surgical services department, ensuring high-quality care and optimal outcomes for the veteran outpatient and inpatient population.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to a team of surgeons, ensuring adherence to best practices and standards of care.
  • Deliver patient-centered diagnostic and therapeutic surgical care in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans to address the specific needs of surgical patients.
  • Perform and supervise a wide range of surgical procedures, ensuring patient safety and best outcomes.
  • Collaborate with other specialists to provide comprehensive care, including cases that may require multidisciplinary management.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic techniques and treatments tailored to the surgical population.
  • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows, contributing to educational development programs affiliated with the University of New Mexico, School of Medicine.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to patient care, teaching, and research, and be eligible for a faculty appointment in the relevant department at the University of New Mexico.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives and participate in surgical research to advance the field of surgery.
  • Manage departmental budgets, staffing, and resources to ensure efficient and effective delivery of surgical services.
  • Foster a collaborative, positive work environment that promotes professional growth and development for surgical staff.
