Position Overview

The Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Childrens Hospital is seeking a Board Certified or Board Eligible Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist to join a highly collaborative, team-based service providing inpatient consult-liaison psychiatric care to medically hospitalized children and adolescents.

This role is ideal for a psychiatrist who enjoys complex, medically integrated cases, values academic engagement and team-based care, and seeks an intellectually rewarding position with manageable volume and strong institutional support. New graduates are welcome.

Clinical Focus

This position is primarily consult-liaison based, caring for children and adolescents hospitalized for medical conditions with concurrent psychiatric needs. The psychiatrist plays a critical role in diagnostic clarification and treatment planning at the bedside and is part of a team that includes pediatric psychologists, masters prepared therapists and care coordinators.

Typical patient presentations include:

  • Psychiatric evaluation following suicide attempt or significant self-injury
  • Psychiatric care requiring inpatient medical monitoring (IV meds, G-tubes, wound care)
  • Eating disorders requiring medical stabilization
  • Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder (FNSD) impacting safe discharge
  • Trauma-related behavioral dysregulation or TBI-associated symptoms
  • Chronic pain syndromes (e.g., CRPS) with functional impairment
  • Medical nonadherence requiring inpatient intervention
  • CNS-involved medical conditions contributing to psychiatric symptoms (e.g., autoimmune encephalitis)

Average patient volume is approximately 2-4 patients per day, allowing time for thoughtful care, teaching, and academic engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consult-liaison psychiatric care to medically hospitalized pediatric patients
  • Collaborate closely with pediatric hospitalists, subspecialists, nursing, social work, psychology, and case management
  • Supervise and teach medical students, residents, and fellows as part of the IU School of Medicine academic mission
  • Contribute to committees, program development, and service improvement initiatives
  • Engage in scholarly activity as desired (research not required, but opportunities are available)

Schedule & Call

  • Current schedule: Monday-Friday, approximately 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
  • Future opportunity: Potential transition to a 7-on / 7-off  model that would include inpatient unit rounding on the weekends
  • Call coverage: Very low commitment (approximately 2 weekends every 6 months)
  • Nighttime and overflow coverage supported by a designated team, supporting predictable end-of-day departures

Part-time arrangements may be considered.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • MD or DO (or foreign equivalent)
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Comfortable with in person, bedside psychiatric care in medically complex patients
  • Interest in consult-liaison psychiatry and interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Willingness to teach and work with learners (academic interest highly valued)
  • Organized, flexible, and collaborative approach to care
  • New graduates encouraged to apply
