Position Summary
The Gastroenterology Staff Physician will provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology care to Veterans at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center. This role includes diagnostic evaluation, procedural care, care coordination, patient education, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary care team. The position is well-supported clinically and operationally, offering predictable scheduling and a strong mission-driven practice environment.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive gastroenterology care to Veterans, including:
- Consultations
- Liver transplant workups
- Specialty referrals and post-treatment aftercare
- Identify patients health problems and develop appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic plans
- Coordinate care activities with other healthcare team members to ensure optimal patient outcomes
- Educate patients and family members regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and disease management
- Participate in quality improvement, peer review, and patient safety initiatives as assigned
- Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams, including:
- Physicians
- Nurse practitioners
- Nursing staff
- Social workers
- Chaplains
- Community partners
Clinical Procedures
The Gastroenterology Staff Physician is expected to be proficient in diagnostic and therapeutic GI procedures, which may include but are not limited to:
- Upper GI endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
- Colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
- Polypectomy
- Small bowel biopsy
- Liver biopsy
- Esophageal dilation (bougie or balloon)
- Esophageal motility studies
- Laparoscopy (peritoneoscopy)
- Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG)
- Laser photocoagulation of vessels
- Laser tumor ablation
- Gastric lavage and cytology
- Sclerotherapy of esophageal varices
- Esophageal band ligation of varices
- Endoscopic ultrasonography with or without fine-needle aspiration (FNA)
- Placement of esophageal stents
Work Environment & Schedule
- Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
- Shared gastroenterology call rotation for:
- Inpatient consults
- Urgent procedures
- Nights and weekends as scheduled
- Collaborative support from experienced nursing and administrative staff
- Stable clinical environment within a federal healthcare system
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $300,000-$400,000
- Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Eligibility for up to $200,000
