Position Highlights

  • Outpatient-focused GI practice
  • Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • No call, no weekends, no holidays
  • One dedicated procedure day per week
  • No ERCP or advanced endoscopy
  • Stable patient volumes and strong nursing support

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide GI evaluations, consultations, follow-up visits, and longitudinal care for Veterans
  • Diagnose and manage gastrointestinal conditions, including chronic liver disease and Hepatitis C
  • Perform standard GI procedures as credentialed, including:
    • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
    • Colonoscopy
    • Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG)
    • Paracentesis
  • Administer conscious sedation per VA procedural guidelines
  • Provide consultative GI support to inpatient services and affiliated Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs)
  • Collaborate with nursing, clerical, and specialty teams to ensure efficient and coordinated care
  • Document care using VA electronic medical record systems (training provided)
  • Participate in quality improvement and Specialty Care initiatives

Work Environment

  • Outpatient-focused GI service at the Poplar Bluff VA
  • One procedure day weekly; remaining days dedicated to clinic
  • Typical volumes:
    • 10-14 clinic patients per day
    • 6-8 procedures per procedure day
  • Dedicated GI nursing staff with shared administrative support
  • APP support may be added as service volume grows
  • No telework (per national Return-to-Office policy)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Compensation Range: $380,000-$400,000
    • Base pay plus market pay (federal cap applies)
  • Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Up to $200,000 over 5 years

Qualifications

Required:

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship
  • Active, unrestricted U.S. medical license (any state or territory)
  • DEA registration
  • BLS and ACLS prior to start date

Preferred:

  • Board eligible or board certified in Gastroenterology

Citizenship

  • U.S. citizens strongly preferred
  • Non-U.S. citizens may be considered in accordance with VA hiring requirements
  • Many successful VA GI physicians nationwide are non-U.S. citizens
