Attending Physician, Occupational Medicine and Employee Health

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is seeking a talented Occupational Medicine Physician to join our dynamic team. Our practice is based on collaboration between dedicated physicians, advanced practitioners, nurses, case managers, medical assistants and administrators, and serves the needs of healthcare personnel at Penn Medicine’s largest hospital. In addition, we provide occupational health services to the University of Pennsylvania, including its on-campus dental, veterinary and diverse research groups, as well as outside clients in the greater Philadelphia area.
Responsibilities:
The Attending Physician will see patients at our practice sites in Philadelphia, primarily on the Penn campus, providing direct patient care, overseeing other clinicians, precepting occupational medicine residents, and participating in administrative and program development projects, as needed. Must be familiar with medical requirements under Pennsylvania and US federal statutes, including blood borne pathogens, worker compensation, ADA accommodations, HIPAA, and OSHA-required medical surveillance. The ideal candidate will have strong clinical and communication skills.
Direct clinical patient care:
- Oversee the patient's diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of occupational exposures, illnesses and/or injuries
- Prepare patients for return to work after illness or injury
- Examines patients to determine the appropriate course of treatment
- Recommend tests to determine extent of illness or help diagnose condition
- Maintain clinical expertise in musculoskeletal injury management, splinting, burn and animal bite care, treating corneal abrasions/foreign body/splash to eye, and workplace allergy management
- Provide medical consultation for vaccine indications, medical exemption reviews, and vaccine reactions
Additional duties:
- Act as a consultant upon request to identify workplace health and ergonomic hazards
- MRO Review of federal and non-regulated substance abuse testing in accordance with the requirements of multiple employers’ substance use policies
- Perform reproductive risk assessments on request of employees/employers regarding hazardous exposures during pregnancy
- Treat individuals with respiratory and dermatologic symptoms associated with workplace exposures
- Perform fit-for-duty examinations for individuals with safety-sensitive work responsibilities
- Perform pre-placement physical examinations
- Supervise the work of nurses, trainees, and Advanced Practice Professionals (PA-Cs, and CRNPs) in Occupational Medicine, and be available as resource for complex clinical questions
- Share on-call (telephone) responsibilities with other practice providers
Opportunities are available to participate in didactic teaching for Penn’s nationally recognized Occupational Medicine Residency program.
Minimum Requirements:
- Board certification/eligibility in Occupational Medicine or Board Certification in any ABMS specialty with significant experience in Occupational Medicine is required
- Completion of Residency Training in Occupational Medicine, preferred
- Board Certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine, preferred
- Certification as Medical Review Officer, required (may obtain after starting position, if necessary)
- Prior experience in Medical Center Occupational Health or other Occupational Medicine are preferred
- Certification as a Commercial Driver Medical Examiner, preferred
- Certification as FAA Medical Examiner, preferred
- Possession of or ability to obtain an unrestricted Pennsylvania Medical License
- Expertise in the review and interpretation of spirometry and audiometric testing is required, including determination of work-relatedness for abnormal test results.
