Section Chief – Heart Failure/LVAD/Transplant

The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is seeking a Section Chief of Advanced Heart Failure, who may also serve as the Medical Director of the Heart Transplantation and Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Programs.

This individual will provide strategic, clinical, and academic leadership for one of the institution’s most advanced and high-acuity cardiovascular programs. The Section Chief will oversee all aspects of advanced heart failure management, including specialized programs in cardiomyopathies and chronic heart failure, durable mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplantation, while driving continued program growth and excellence.

This role offers an outstanding opportunity for an accomplished academic cardiologist to assume a major leadership position, with meaningful involvement in clinical care, education, and translational research within a premier academic medical center.

Position Highlights

  • Provide overall leadership and strategic direction for the Advanced Heart Failure, Cardiac Transplant and LVAD programs
  • Option to Serve as Medical Director of the Heart Transplantation and VAD programs. The section head will ensure program quality, growth, and regulatory compliance of these programs
  • Oversee high-acuity clinical operations related to advanced heart failure therapies, including mechanical circulatory support and transplant care
  • Maintain an active clinical practice focused on advanced heart failure
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including cardiac surgery, critical care, and transplant services, as well as the Transplant and Cardiovascular Service Lines
  • Lead faculty recruitment, mentorship, and professional development within the section
  • Support and expand educational programs for fellows, residents, and medical students
  • Promote a culture of academic excellence, innovation, and continuous quality improvement
  • Foster clinical, translational, and outcomes-based research initiatives within advanced heart failure and transplantation
  • Represent the program within institutional leadership and national transplant and heart failure communities

Ideal Experience

  • Established academic cardiologist with a strong record of clinical excellence in diagnosis and management of cardiomyopathies, and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably within a heart transplant or mechanical circulatory support program
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in a complex academic environment
  • Strong commitment to education, mentorship, and faculty development
  • Track record of scholarly activity, including clinical or translational research
  • Experience driving program growth, quality metrics, and innovation in advanced cardiac care

Qualifications

  • D. or equivalent degree from an approved LCME-accredited medical school
  • Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease
  • Board Certified in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology
  • Eligible for Texas medical licensure
  • Demonstrated expertise in the management of advanced heart failure, VAD therapy, and cardiac transplantation
