Job Description: Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive psychiatric care for adult patients in a 24-bed inpatient Behavioral Health Services department within a community hospital. This position is part of a multidisciplinary team including one additional PMHNP, two psychiatrists, a psychologist, social workers, and discharge planners. The PMHNP collaborates closely with this team to ensure the delivery of compassionate, evidence-based mental health care. This is a weekday position with no weekend or on-call responsibilities.
Position Summary
The PMHNP will assess, diagnose, and manage psychiatric conditions for adult inpatients, develop individualized treatment plans, prescribe medications, and support the stabilization and recovery of patients admitted to the Behavioral Health unit.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and assessments for adult inpatients.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment and medication management plans.
- Collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, discharge planners, and nursing staff to coordinate care.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as needed.
- Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment, and medications.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and treatment team meetings.
- Document all patient encounters, treatment plans, and progress notes accurately and timely in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- completion of OMH legal documents such as 9.27 (2PC) certificates
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state, and federal regulations.
- Support discharge planning and continuity of care by coordinating with outpatient providers.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives within the Behavioral Health Services department.
Qualifications
- Current and unrestricted Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification.
- Current state licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
- Experience preferred (new graduates with strong clinical experience considered).
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Knowledge of psychopharmacology, evidence-based treatment, and crisis intervention.
- Commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.
