Interventional Psychiatry Fellowship
Banner University Medical Group | Phoenix
(Non ACGME accredited fellowship)
The Interventional Psychiatry Fellowship seeks physicians who have developed a strong foundation in general psychiatry and wish to pursue advanced training in neuromodulation, procedural psychiatry and the care of patients with treatment-resistant and complex psychiatric disorders!
Advancing the treatment of complex psychiatric illness through neuromodulation, innovative therapeutics, scholarship and compassionate patient care.
The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix and Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix Interventional Psychiatry Fellowship is a one-year, non-ACGME accredited, advanced training program designed for psychiatrists seeking expertise in the evaluation and treatment of patients with complex and treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders.
Fellows receive comprehensive clinical training in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), ketamine, intranasal esketamine and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) while developing expertise in interventional psychiatric consultation, longitudinal treatment planning, measurement-based care, clinical research, quality improvement and medical education.
Training takes place across Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix and the Banner - University Medicine Interventional Psychiatry practice in the Arcadia area of Phoenix, providing exposure to both academic medical-center practice and longitudinal outpatient interventional psychiatry.
Requirements:
Applicants must have successfully completed or be on track to complete before the fellowship start date, an accredited general psychiatry residency that meets institutional appointment requirements.
Candidates should be eligible for appointment at the PGY-5/junior faculty level and meet all Banner Health and University of Arizona credentialing requirements.
Applicants should be board-eligible or board-certified in general psychiatry by the time of fellowship entry, as applicable to institutional policy.
Candidates must be eligible for the appropriate Arizona physician licensure or training authorization required for their appointment.
Successful completion of applicable licensing examinations, including USMLE Step 3 or COMLEX Level 3 as appropriate, should be required before fellowship entry unless institutional policy establishes a different requirement.
Curriculum and clinical rotations:
The Interventional Psychiatry Fellowship is a one-year, longitudinally integrated program
that combines supervised clinical training, structured didactics, scholarship, teaching and
professional development.
Rather than learning each treatment in isolation, fellows are trained to evaluate the patient
comprehensively and determine when ECT, TMS, ketamine/esketamine, VNS or continued
conventional treatment is most appropriate
Clinical experiences occur primarily at:
Banner University Medical Center Phoenix, where fellows participate in academic
medical-center interventional psychiatry, consultation and procedure-based care.
Banner University Medicine Interventional Psychiatry at Arcadia, where fellows gain
longitudinal outpatient experience in consultation, neuromodulation,
ketamine/esketamine treatment and follow-up. Banner lists the interventional psychiatry
practice at 4200 E. Camelback Road, Suite 107.
The College of Medicine Phoenix already supports a broad psychiatry educational
environment. Its psychiatry residency is ACGME-accredited and includes clinical training
across Banner University Medical Center Phoenix and multiple Phoenix-area sites, while
the University's GME infrastructure serves as the sponsoring framework for Banner
University Medical Center Phoenix residency and fellowship programs.
Proposed annual progression:
The fellowship is best organized as a longitudinal program rather than four isolated
three-month rotations, because continuous exposure allows the fellow to follow patients
from consultation through acute treatment, response assessment and maintenance.
