About Orthopedic Surgery Careers
Orthopedic surgeons are trained in the preservation, investigation, and restoration of the form and function of the extremities, spine, and associated structures by medical, surgical, and physical means. An Orthopedic surgeon is involved with the care of patients whose musculoskeletal problems include congenital deformities, trauma, infections, tumors, metabolic disturbances of the musculoskeletal system, deformities, injuries, and degenerative diseases of the spine, hands, feet, knee, hip, shoulder, and elbow. Their practice may be broad or limited to an area of special interest, such as hand surgery or sports medicine.
Within the specialty of orthopedics one may expect to perform some of the following procedures.: reconstruct bones, ligaments, and tendons; conduct surgical procedures on patients with injured bones, ligaments, and tendons; assistant in the rehabilitation and post-care of injuries; replace inefficient joints and unhealthy or defective bones; provide knowledgeable medical advice to patients about injuries and prevention; and amputations.
Technologies advance as time passes, in the future, there will be changes and challenges that come to surface. New technologies and new procedures are two of the factors contributing to the demand for orthopedic physicians and surgeons. The orthopedic specialty is a demanding, but at the same time is an exciting one.
