The Department of Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center (MHMC) is seeking applications for the position of Director for the Division of Hematology and Oncology. Located in Cleveland, OH, MHMC seeks an experienced physician with a proven record of accomplishment of clinical excellence, growth, and leadership. The Director will work collaboratively with the Cancer Center Director and Chair of Medicine to enhance the clinical, educational and research missions of the Division and the multispecialty Cancer Center. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the strategic initiative of membership in the Case Western University Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The Division of Hematology and Oncology has established clinical expertise in the treatment of hematologic, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, and breast malignancies and is committed to expanding programs across all oncologic subspecialties. Members of the Division collaborate closely with specialists across the Cancer Center including experts in surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, and radiation oncology to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary cancer care. The Cancer Center supports this collaborative approach through 12 subspecialty multi-disciplinary tumor boards and maintains accreditation from several nationally recognized organizations including the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as an Academic Comprehensive Cancer Program, the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, and the Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy.
Faculty are engaged in the MHMC internal medicine residency and hematology / oncology fellowship programs. The fellows cover the inpatient hematology and oncology consultation service for the MHMC hospital. The consult service expertise can also be requested by the separate inpatient cancer unit run by hospitalists.
Clinical research is an integral component of the Division and the MetroHealth Cancer Center. After holding the ECOG Cooperative Group grant at MetroHealth for 38 years, the Division and the Cancer Center are full partners (Lead Academic Participating Site) in the Case Western Reserve University National Clinical Trials Network grant. With the assistance of the MHMC oncology research team, all Division members are expected to enroll their patients in NCI, pharmaceutical-sponsored, and investigator-initiated studies. The Division is closely aligned with the MHMC’s basic science driven Division of Cancer Biology and the Gene and Cellular Therapy Institute.

As part of an ongoing $1 billion Campus Transformation Plan, a 300,000 square foot Outpatient Health Center will open in June. The MetroHealth System provides care to approximately 27,000 inpatients and 3,000 newborns annually. Last year, nearly 1.4 million outpatient visits were recorded throughout system.
Throughout its long history, The MetroHealth System has been and continues to be committed to its academic mission and has excelled in both basic and clinical research. Past scientific luminaries include Dr. Frederick C. Robbins and Charles H. Rammelkamp, Jr., who received the Nobel Prize and Lasker Award, respectively. The research enterprise currently boasts $30 million/year of research and sponsored program grants and contracts. In the new Research Strategic Alignment released this year, the MetroHealth System has set cancer research as one of four research focus areas with a mandate to strengthen basic cancer biology research and expand clinical trial portfolio. One goal is to become a member institution of the NCI-designated Case Comprehensive Cancer Center in two years. The new Director of Hematology/Oncology is expected to play a leading role in the exciting new initiative.
The principal teaching hospital of Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, MetroHealth maintains a fine tradition of academics and research. All active staff physicians are full-time faculty of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and actively participate in graduate and undergraduate medical education. Last year, 390 residents and fellows received intensive training in more than 25 specialties. In addition, 991 medical students completed more than 1,400 rotations.
